Americans with Disabilities Act Now Applies to More People
A new law went into effect on January 1, 2009 that broadens the spectrum of who can be covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Prior to this new law, the Americans with Disabilities Act only covered so many people with specified disabilities. Now with this new law more people are covered under the act. As of January 1, 2009 the Americans with Disabilities Act deems people disabled on the basis of their underlying medical condition, not the therapy they have pursued. An exception is made under the law for people with poor eyesight that is fixed with eyeglasses.
The Americans with Disabilities Act still requires people filing for disability to prove that they have some sort of physical or mental disability and that it affects the ability to complete a major daily life activity. Congress hopes that with the passage of this new law that Veterans of the Armed Forces will benefit greatly from this new law.
