Social Security Benefits for Arthritis

Many people think arthritis is one disease but in reality, it is a group of diseases that occur for different reasons. Though they may be different diseases under one title, the common thread between them is that they damage the joints of the body. Most types of arthritis are chronic and can last for a long and painful period. Arthritis can assault joints in nearly every part of the body and deform the area they beset. Arthritis can cause swelling, generate heat in the affected area, and turn the skin red and tender. The pain and swelling can be severe but last a short time or it can be a prolonged agony. Regardless of the symptoms, it will gradually deform and destroy your joints. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability for Americans over fifty-five years of age.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis – This chronic autoimmune disorder makes the body’s own defense system destroy the affected joints. This immobilizing and excruciating inflammatory condition affects other parts of the body such as vital organs, blood vessels, muscles, and even the skin.
  • Gout – This is considered one of the most excruciating varieties of arthritis. It begins when uric acid crystals form in the connective tissue or in the joint and causes painful inflammation. It usually affects the big toe, but it can affect any joint of the extremities. Some causes include ingesting alcohol, shellfish, anchovies, dried beans, peas, liver, or gravy. The crystals cause severe pain, soreness, swelling, stiffness, warmth, and redness, to the affected joints.
  • Pseudogout – This is similar to Gout but it is caused by the formation of calcium pyrophosphate crystals.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis or Arthropathic Psoriasis – This is another autoimmune disease that encourages the body to attack itself. People that suffer from Psoriasis are more prone to this type of inflammatory arthritis. People with psoriatic arthritis are likely to develop psoriatic nail lesions or complete nail loss.
  • Septic Arthritis – Bacteria, virus, fungus, or mycobacteria that cause joint infection produce this type of Arthritis. Contamination of the joint happens when either the invading organism is carried to the joint from an infection in another part of the body via the bloodstream or the invading organism has direct contact to connecting tissue by lesion or cut to the skin.
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis, Marie Struempell Disease, or Bechterew Syndrome – This is a very painful and degenerative form of inflammatory arthritis. It principally affects the spine and sacroiliac joints. It ultimately causes fusions in the spine. If allowed to cover the entire spine, it will result in complete fusion of the spinal column causing deformity and severe stiffness for the person. It also causes inflammation of the heart valves, lungs, and eyes.
