Benefits for Stay at Home, Non Working Spouses

It is not commonly known but both Social Security and Medicare provide benefits for stay at home spouses. Most social security benefits cannot be paid to a non working, stay at home spouse until the working spouse begins receiving those benefits, which is around the age of 62 nowadays if early retirement benefits are taken at a 20 percent reduction. If early retirement benefits are not taken than the age of receiving social security benefits is 66. To qualify for benefits as a non working, stay at home spouse, the spouse would have to be at least 62 years old.

The rules apply to both men and women, no matter which one is the non working, stay at home spouse. If the person staying at home is at least 60 years of age and the working spouse dies then the stay at home spouse is entitled to benefits. If there are children under the age of 16 still in the home (18 if the child is in high school) then the spouse and the children are entitled to survivors' insurance.
