Disability Benefits For Your Children
Serious disabilities do not just affect the lives of the disabled. Families with disabilities often face significant financial and emotional turmoil. If you have a disability and are planning to apply to the Social Security Administration for disability benefits, you should contact a disability law firm to discuss your options. Beyond helping you with every step of the application process, a disability attorney may be able to suggest financial opportunities you may not even have considered as an option. For example, did you know that if you have a disability, your child might also be eligible for disability benefits?
Disability Coverage For The Children Of Disabled Parents
First, you must be able to prove that you are disabled under the regulations and restrictions of the SSA. This process may be lengthy and complicated. You will need to prove through medical records and laboratory tests that you have a disability. You will further need to prove that your disability negatively affects your ability to function in a normal workplace environment. If you qualify for disability benefits, your spouse and children may also qualify for coverage. Your children may qualify to be covered whether or not you are married. If your children were born out of wedlock, a paternity test may be required. There are a few other qualifications your child must fit to be eligible.
Qualifications
When you apply for disability benefits you have an opportunity to apply for your child as well. To be eligible your child must be:
- Unmarried
- Under 18 years old
- Or 18 to19 years old and a full time student still in high school
- Or be 18 or older and have a disability that began before age 22
Length of Benefits
If your child is disabled, his or her benefits can continue after they reach adulthood. As a general rule, if your child is not disabled, disability insurance will stop when they become 18 years old.
Each qualified child in your family may receive up to one-half of your full disability amount every month. Every case is different, so there is no way to tell exactly how much you and your children may be eligible for. The total amount your child qualifies for may depend on your total benefit amount and how many family members you have included on your application. A child can typically get about 50 to 80 percent of your disability benefit.
