Veteran Disability Compensation

VA Disability Compensation

For their service to our country, veterans are entitled to certain rights. If a veteran is disabled, then he or she is entitled to compensation for his or her disability, specifically when that disability can be linked to a condition that was acquired during or resulted from active service duty. However, compensation varies according to both the type of injury or condition, and how that injury or condition impacts a veteran's day-to-day life.

VA disability compensation is made up of tax-free payments delivered to veterans by the United States government. A veteran, for all intensive purposes pertaining to compensation, is defined as any individual who "served in the active military, naval or air services, and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable." Disability compensation is ultimately dependant on the type of injury sustained by the veteran, as well as a host of other factors, including marital status, whether or not the veteran is responsible for school-aged children, and whether or not the veteran is responsible for administering care to a dependant parent.

The United States Department of Veteran Affairs reasons that veterans are administered disability payments based on the percentage of disability they suffer from. That is, a veteran who is deemed to be 25% disabled is going to receive less compensation than a veteran who is deemed to be 75% disabled. Furthermore, a veteran who sustained injury during active duty may receive greater benefits than a veteran who is afflicted with a condition that was simply influenced by and resulted from a condition or injury that occurred during active duty. Ultimately though, the determination process is based on the severity of conditions and how those conditions impact a veteran's daily life. However, this process can be relatively subjective at times, especially if one examining physician determines that a disability is less debilitating than another examining physician determines it to be.
