New DRS Director Wants Cool Jobs and Independence for Oklahomans with Disabilities

The new Director of the Department of Rehabilitation Services in Oklahoma is looking for cool jobs and independence for Oklahomans with disabilities. "Cool jobs with good benefits and the opportunity to live independently" that's the Department of Rehabilitation Services' (DRS') twin vision for Oklahomans with disabilities, according to the agency's new director, Michael O'Brien, Ed.D. According to the United States Census Bureau released in 2007, nearly one in five Oklahomans ages five and over have disabilities. That is a total of 620,685 Oklahomans with disabilities.

One of the organizations that is monitored by the DRS is Disability Determination. Disability Determination makes medical disability decisions for Social Security disability income and Supplemental Security Income benefits. Social Security disability is provided to millions of people each year across the United States because they are not able to work for their living because of illness or injury that keeps them out of work for an extended period of time.
