Enrollment Begins for Tax Relief
The annual enrollment for a tax relief program for senior citizens in Suffolk County has begun and the process if being coordinated by the county's Department of Social Services. The enrollment program for tax relief is not just for senior citizens but it is also for disabled citizens of the county. The signup period began on January 1, 2009 and ends on January 30, 2009 for relief on real estate tax bills that are due in December of 2009 and January of 2010. This program is put into place annually and all applicants must re-apply each year if they wish to obtain the tax relief.
The program offered by Suffolk County is in addition to whatever money a person acquires from their Social Security disability benefits they receive from the Social Security Administration. The only catch for the Suffolk County relief program is that the person must be totally and permanently disabled to receive the relief if they are not 65 years of age or older.
