Federal Disability Laws
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Discrimination on the foundation of disability is prohibited by the Americans with Disabilities Act and is also pertains to the United States Congress. This Act includes areas of importance such as, employment, state and local government, commercial facilities, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications. In order to be protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act one must have a disability or one must have a relationship with and individual who has a disability.
- Title I: Employment
This ADA Title bans any form of discrimination during the process of recruiting, hiring, training, social activities, promotions, payment, and other employment benefits.
- Title II: State and Local Government Programs and Services
This ADA Title requires that all disabled individuals receive an equal opportunity in all programs and services such as, education, employment, recreation, social services, voting, transportation and health care.
- Title III: Public Accommodations
This ADA Title calls for all businesses and nonprofit services offer certain types of courses, transportation, and commercial facilities.
- Title IV: Telecommunications Relay Services
This ADA Title addresses access of telephone and television for those individuals with hearing and speech impairments. This includes the access of telecommunications relay services (TRS) and teletypewriters (TTY) and the overall requirement of closed captioning of service announcements that are funded by the Federal government.

Fair Housing Act
The Fair Housing Act bans any form housing discrimination including race, color, religion, disability, gender, national origin and/or family status. Due to this Act, it is considered unlawful to discriminate while selling or renting a housing facility. This also applies to activities such as financing, zoning, advertising, and construction.
Air Carrier Access Act
The Air Carrier Access Act addresses the ban on discrimination of individuals with physical or mental disabilities in air transportation. The existing requirements consist of boarding assistance and accessible features for the disabled.
Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act
This act requires that all United States federal polling locations be accessible for those individuals with disabilities.
National Voter Registration Act
This ensures that all Americas are able to exercise their right to vote, also known as the “Motor Voter Act”. Requiring all State-funded offices engaged in providing disabled services with the duty to provide all eligible applicants with voter registration forms while providing them with assistance in filling them out.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that all public schools provide a free education and environment for disabled children. It also requires that each school system develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each disabled child.
Rehabilitation Act
The Rehabilitation Act bans disability discrimination in programs directed by the Federal government such as agencies, financial assistance, and employment. The standards for Federal employment are the same as those in the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Architectural Barriers Act (ABA)
This act requires that all building altered, constructed or designed with Federal funding comply with Federal standards. These standards consist of physical accessibility.
Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
The Workforce Investment Act promotes an increase in areas such as employment, earnings, and job retention. Section 188 prohibits disability discrimination within the overall improvement of the workforce facility and its activities.
Telecommunications Act
In both Sections 255 and 251 of the Communication Act amended by the Telecommunications Act, it is stated that all telecommunication suppliers provide all persons with disabilities, with working telecommunication equipment and services.
