Medicare

Medicare is a government run health insurance program for the elderly and disabled. Medicare was created as part of the Social Security Amendments of 1965. Since then, it has undergone many changes, but it has continued to grow. Those covered by Medicare include:

  • Everyone 65 years of age or older
  • People disabled for two years or more
  • Those with end-stage renal disease who may require dialysis or a kidney transplant
  • Individuals who have chosen to buy into Medicare that have no other coverage

Medicare is hospital insurance and supplementary medical insurance. Through Medicare, coverage can be found for inpatient hospital bills, nursing facilities, home health, and hospice services.

  • Inpatient hospital care - this coverage may include all potential costs such as nursing services, operations and testing
  • Skilled nursing facility - this is only covered by Medicare when it is certified as necessary and only within 30 days of a hospitalization of at least three days.
  • Home health agency care - this is also subject to eligibility requirements. Coverage may include a home health aide if rehabilitation, therapy and nursing care are required.
  • Hospice care - this service is provided for terminally ill people who are expected to pass within six months. With Medicare, the beneficiary pays no deductibles for hospice care, but may have co-insurance fees for medications.

Medicare attorneys can provide a number of services to recipients of Medicare.

  • Reassurance - Medicare is a government run health care program that can be complex and confusing. A Medicare attorney can help clarify what you need to do and how to understand your coverage.
