Military Death and Disability Benefits Short Change Vet Families

It is becoming an increasing problem within the United States today that Pentagon payments for death and disability for service personnel are far lower than private sector payouts. Two authors, Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes write in their new book that the Pentagon pays out $100,000 in death gratuity and $500,000 in life insurance to family survivors of servicemen and women killed in action while families of civilian workers killed in an environmental accident usually collect millions of dollars in court settlements. Their new book is titled "The Three Trillion Dollar War."

Many veterans' families are also having trouble getting enough money in payouts from traumatic brain injuries. These injuries often prevent a soldier from holding down a job and it requires trips to the doctor. If and when a soldier is diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries, the government pays out less than $60,000 in combined veterans' and social security disability benefits. Brain injury experts estimate that it costs nearly $4 million for a person suffering from a traumatic brain injury during their lifetime.
