Organic Brain Dysfunction

The Social Security Administration has a list of mental disorders that may be considered a disability. One of these disabling mental disorders is organic brain dysfunction. The SSA defines organic brain dysfunctions as "abnormalities of a behavioral or psychological nature that are associated with brain dysfunction". So, what is an organic brain dysfunction?

An organic brain dysfunction is a general term that covers all diseases that cause decreased mental function. This syndrome rarely includes psychiatric disorders.

What Causes this Condition?

While organic brain dysfunction can be common in the elderly, it is not a natural part of the aging process. A few of the most common causes include:

  • Trauma - When a brain injury is caused by trauma there are a few resulting injuries that may cause organic brain dysfunction. These injuries include: bleeding into the brain, concussions, bleeding into the area around the brain and increased pressure on the brain from blood clotting.
  • Breathing conditions - hypoxia (low oxygen in the body) and hypercapnia (high levels of carbon dioxide) are two conditions that may cause organic brain dysfunction.
  • Dementia - when caused by metabolic factors may contribute to brain disorders
  • Degenerative disorders - this lengthy list can include Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Pick's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, senile dementia and Diffuse Lewy Body disease.
  • Cardiovascular disorders - possible causes include arrhythmias, hypertensive brain injury, strokes, heart infections and Transient Ischemic Attack.
  • Infections - both acute and chronic infections can cause organic brain dysfunctions. Meningitis, Encephalitis and Septicemia can all cause brain disorders as well.
  • Other serious conditions - cancer, liver disease, thyroid disease, kidney disease and vitamin deficiency can all result in organic brain dysfunction.

Organic Brain Dysfunction and Disability Benefits

Mental disorders must be evaluated thoroughly before being accepted as a disability. A claimant will have to provide his/her medical history, lab results and a physical examination that proves the cause of their disorder and disability. In other words, for a disability claim to be accepted, you will have to prove you have the disorder and that it has caused you to lose functional abilities and you are therefore disabled. If you face a disability hearing, the judge will want to see what you are capable of doing despite your limitations and what other conditions you may have. The court will closely evaluate how your organic brain dysfunction affects you. They will examine your personality, mood, memory, emotions and your cognitive abilities. Your evaluation may be considerably detailed and complex. It can help to have an experienced disability attorney with you to guide you through the process and protect your legal rights.
