What is SSI?
There are cases where Social Security Benefits are small because the claimant did not earn enough through Social Security taxes. Supplemental Security Income was created to provide cash for basic needs like shelter, clothes and food. SSI is a needs-based program for those who are only eligible for small Social Security benefits or no benefits at all. It is a federal income program funded by general taxes and not Social Security taxes. At its core, it is designed to help the neediest -- whether they are disabled, aged, blind or have little to no income.
How does it work?
Supplemental income exists to supplement low Social Security benefits so that claimants can reach the minimum monthly benefit amount. This number changes often, but let's say the minimum monthly benefit is $650 and your Social Security benefits only make you eligible for $300. SSI can provide you with the $350 a month to reach the minimum. Again, this is only an example and not representative of your particular case. The supplemental social security income does have limitations. Federal disability laws specify that someone cannot be eligible for SSI if they have $2,000 in disposable assets. No matter how low your benefits are, if you have over $2,000 you are not eligible for SSI.
SSI or Social Security?
Each case is different. The individual who reviews your claim at the social security office may choose to utilize your Social Security coverage, your SSI options or a combination thereof. To apply for SSI based on a disability you will first need to meet income and resource criteria. If you have few enough assets you will then need to provide evidence for your claim.
- Your work history - everything you did in a 15-year period before you could no longer work because of a disability
- Information regarding your impairments
- Medical contacts - including the doctors and hospitals you have been to regarding your disability
- Medical treatments - all treatments and procedures you had because of your disability
- Medications - what prescriptions you take and who prescribed them
- Tests - all the medical tests you have undergone that prove your disability
The preceding criteria will be used to determine if you are disabled in addition to not having the assets for normal Social Security benefits. They will want to review any substantial gainful activities you may have had. Most application procedures take up to three or four months at least. Many applicants are initially refused and must appeal their SSI case.
