COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment)
An automatic increase in Social Security benefits and Supplemental
Security Income payments, due to the increase in the cost-of-living
also known as inflation.
Credits (Social Security Credits)
Credits, previously called “Quarters of Coverage” are
earned as you work and pay taxes. These credits add up to qualify
you towards future Social Security benefits.
Decision Notice (Award Letter or Denial Letter)
This is the letter notifying you of your eligibility for Social
Security benefits, explaining the reason for the decision made
and the amount that will payable.
Delayed Retirement Credits (DRC)
If retirement is delayed beyond the full retirement age (FRA),
Social Security benefits are increased. A certain percentage
is chosen based on the person’s date of birth.

Family Benefits (Dependent Benefits)
The following people may receive benefits as well, if you’re
eligible for retirement or disability benefits.

Spouse if he or she is at least 62 years of age
- Divorced ex-spouse
- Unmarried children under the age 18
- Disabled children of the age 18 or older
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) Tax
This is the tax withheld from salary or income that funds programs
such as Social Security and Medicare.
Insured Status
This refers to your eligibility for retirement or disability
benefits based on the amount of Social Security credits you
have accrued over your lifetime.
OASDI (Old Age Survivors and Disability Insurance)
When you retire, this Social Security program provides you with
monthly cash benefits for both you and your dependents.
PIA (Primary Insurance Amount)
If you are a retired worker at the full retirement age this is
your monthly amount payable. This also applies if you have
never received a retirement benefit and are disabled.
Representative Payee
If you are unable to handle your own financial affairs, you may
be able to receive Social Security benefits or Supplemental
Security Income payments. An appointed person such as relative
or friend will be assigned to handle your Social Security matters,
after a careful analysis of you individual situation is completed.
RIB (Retirement Insurance Benefit)
Money payable to you upon initial retirement as long as you have
the full amount of Social Security credits.
SEI (Self-employment/Self-employment Income)
This pertains to you if you have net earnings of $400 or more
in a taxable year, and are self-employed.
Social Security
As you work, you pay taxes into the Social Security system, ensuring
that when you retire you receive monthly benefits based on
your reported earnings. This also applies if you become disabled.
SS-5
In order to receive Social Security number, this application
form needs to be completed. This form also has to be filled
out in order to obtain a replacement card or a duplicate card.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
This is the program funded by general tax revenues, provided
to help no or little income aged, blind, and/or disabled people
by providing monthly cash payments.
